On October 31, Italian police stormed a large rave party in the city of Modena.

The party had lasted for three days and became a catalyst for a subsequent law ban.

The so-called "gathering ban" applies to gatherings of 50 or more people that constitute a so-called "security risk or danger to order".

Organizers or others involved can be fined between 1,000 and 10,000 euros or jailed for up to six years, writes the Reuters news agency.

May affect the right to protest

In her speech on November 2, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni raised several arguments for banning raves.

Among other things, large rave parties can destroy natural areas, pose risks to personal safety and disturb public order.

Currently, the ban is written as a decree.

- It is a law that is introduced hastily and hilariously because you are anxious to implement it.

But it still has to go through parliament and there is a lot of debate about this, says Kristina Kappelin.

A strong criticism leveled at the new law is that it is too vague and could easily be applied to other public gatherings such as protests and demonstrations.

- One is simply worried about the constitutionally protected right to protest and freedom of speech, says Kappelin.

The techno DJ: "people are very scared"

Isabelle Beaucamp from Berlin works as a techno DJ in Rome.

She believes that the new law restricts an entire cultural scene, especially for aspiring artists in the genre of electronic music who more easily get their gigs on the "underground" scenes.

- People are very afraid to organize anything at all, she says.

According to Beaucamp, it is also difficult to limit all rave parties as they form a large part of Italian nightlife, especially in the summer.

- There are not as many typical nightclubs as in, for example, Berlin.

But not much happens outside because it's so hot, she says.
