L'Ecole de Minuit

by Maëlle Desard, published on October 12, 2022 by Éditions Rageot.

His favorite quote:

After my apparently very problematic overweight for my completely fantasized future career, she gears up cash on STDs and the risk of unprotected intercourse.

I don't have the strength to blush, or to be offended: if I show the slightest sign of weakness, she will rush into it.

My mother is a predator, after all.

She feels the flaws.

And then why is she worried, frankly?

The school will be armored with cannons, powerful Nocturnes and all the rest.

A vampire-human half-breed with 30% body fat?

Little chance that I create crowd movements...

Why this book?

  • Because

    L'École de Minuit

is the new novel by Maëlle Desard,

the author of the excellent crazy fantasy series

    Les tribulations by Esther Parmentier

    .

Here we meet Simeon, 15, as he prepares to enter the École de Minuit for the first time, an establishment intended for Nocturnes.

Thus, the half-vampire half-human teenager will meet his new comrades there, in particular minotaurs, vampires, liches, mermaids and even, to the greatest despair of our hero, a werewolf.

  • Because Simeon is an endearing hero with multiple insecurities,

and his mother's reflections on his weight, the overwhelming aura of a perfect sister and her canines that seem unwilling to grow, don't really help him gain confidence. .

At the Ecole de Minuit, he will befriend two classmates and will finally be able to distance himself from a loving but intrusive mother.

Things will quickly take a disturbing turn when students disappear.

When it's the turn of his sister and his friend Colin to give no sign of life, our hero goes in search of answers.

  • Because we discover here a novel youth crazy

    and rooted in its time.

Thanks to a pen that is still just as funny and full of caustic punchlines, Maëlle Desard takes her readers on a carefully crafted universe.

Despite the strange residents who populate the boarding school, the students are no strangers to the problems encountered by humans and themes such as fatphobia, xenophobia or harassment are subtly brought in without the novel losing a drop of its humor.

  • Because

    L'Ecole de Minuit

    is a children's fantasy novel

that will fascinate you, make you laugh and touch you thanks to the tribulations of a half-vampire, half-human teenager who will have to juggle between the discovery of a new school, the meeting of new comrades, some of whom are terribly dangerous, an unexpected investigation in surprising company and many realizations concerning a world far from being devoid of injustices... A pleasure from the first capital letter to the end, ideal to devour under a plait at nightfall!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

When Simeon joins the Ecole de Minuit, he is delighted to distance himself from his mother and meet his new classmates.

Unfortunately, he realizes something is up when many students, including his sister, go missing...

Characters.

Simeon, half-vampire, half-human, will befriend Joel, a lich who doesn't speak his mind (but I imagine he could) and who is committed to his community, and Colin, a mermaid.

They will meet the werewolf Eir and her wisp… a duo as dangerous as they are courageous.

Places.

The novel takes place in France, in Colmar, and more precisely at the Ecole de Minuit.

The time.

The story takes place today and begins, for Siméon, when he first entered the Ecole de Minuit.

The author.

Maëlle Desard was born in France and she chose Switzerland as her place of life.

Passionate about video games and fantasy, she signs, with

L'École de Minuit

, her 4th novel.

This book was read with

pleasure by Anne-So Echos de Mots, blogger specializing in children's and teenage literature.

“For me, reading can be as much a personal pleasure in which one runs to take refuge as an excuse to discuss and meet other readers.

I am a lover of words always interested in new discoveries.
