"The Rat Proposal was created by Jiang Mingchu, a famous lyricist, and Wan Li, a national first-class composer, based on the folk songs of the Bai nationality. These two teachers tailored it for me. And my relationship with Mr. Wan Li can be traced back to more than 20 years. A few years ago." On the 30th, in an interview with a reporter from Chinanews.com, Xiao Apeng sold it off proudly.

Xiao Apeng was born in Shilong Village, the hinterland of Shibao Mountain, Shaxi Town, Jianchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, where the traditional Bai folk festival Shibao Folk Song Festival was held.

Everyone of the local Bai people can sing and dance well. Xiao A Peng's father was a famous "singer king" at that time, and his grandfather was a good player in making Bai people's plucked stringed musical instruments.

Xiao A Peng, who grew up in a strong music atmosphere, regarded his father as an idol since he was a child, and dreamed of bringing Bai music to a broader stage one day.

Although Xiao Apeng showed excellent musical talent when he was a child, his father did not support him to study music at that time.

"My father hopes that I can study hard and become a teacher in the future." Xiao Apeng recalled that his father did not want to teach him Bai folk songs, so he imitated the songs on the tapes to practice; Homemade sanxian with cans, fishing line and bamboo poles.

In 2004, Xiao A Peng ushered in a turning point of fate.

At that time, Yang Liping, a famous dancer, was recruiting the actors of the song and dance collection "Images of Yunnan" in Dali, and Xiao Apeng, who was skilled in playing and singing, was successfully selected, and since then he has officially entered the stage of performance.

In 2007, he won the silver award in the Yunnan Young Singer Contest, and will go to Beijing to participate in the CCTV Young Singer Contest.

"What I was most excited about at the time was that my person in charge was Mr. Wan Li!" Xiao Apeng explained the reason. In the 1990s, the TV series "Children of Five Golden Flowers" was a hit nationwide, in which Jiang Mingchu and Wan Li collaborated , The episode with national characteristics made Xiao A Peng infatuated, and the names Jiang Mingchu and Wan Li were also deeply in his heart.

In the process of preparing for the competition, Wan Li served as Xiao A Peng's instructor, and joined hands with Jiang Mingchu to create the competition song "Rat Proposal" for him.

In the end, Xiao Apeng won the Outstanding Singer Award in the CCTV Young Singer Competition in 2008, and he and Wan Li have also forged a deep relationship between mentor and apprentice since then.

"Mr. Wan Li helped not only me, but also many folk musicians with dreams. He helped them realize their dreams and let them continue to inherit and carry forward folk music." Xiao Apeng said.

Since then, Xiao Apeng has traveled to many countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and America to perform as a singer. These experiences have made him further aware of the charm and power of folk music. "Yunnan folk music is very popular overseas. When I play the sanxian, and foreign musicians play the guitar, even if they don’t understand the language, they can collide with sparks.”

Today, Xiao Apeng has grown into an excellent new-generation Bai nationality singer-songwriter, and he is more aware of the urgency of inheriting national music.

"A lot of ethnic music is being lost at an accelerated rate. For example, some Bai children no longer speak the Bai language, and are even more reluctant to listen to the ancient Bai folk songs."

To this end, Xiao A Peng, like his own teacher Wan Li, selflessly helps young musicians while insisting on composing catchy folk songs one after another.

"The "Love Song of Pigs" I created is very popular among the Bai people, and many people on multiple video platforms have made secondary creations." Xiao Apeng said happily.

What makes Xiao A Peng even more gratified is that his father has already understood and supported his music dream.

"My father funded and contracted the old village public office in our village and named it the Shibao Folk Song Club Training Institute, and he is engaged in the teaching work." Xiao Apeng and his son have contributed to the inheritance of national music in different ways.
