Pierre Soulages died on Wednesday October 26 at the age of 102, his entourage announced to AFP.

He lived in Sète, in the Hérault, with his wife Colette.

The artist, the most emblematic figure of French contemporary art, will remain famous for his work in black paint.

Born in Rodez in 1919 at the end of the First World War, Pierre Soulages developed a passion for painting very early on.

Raised by his mother and his big sister after the death of his father, when he was 5 years old, Soulages fell in love with the color black and explored its universe throughout his artistic life.

He composed in his palette with "outrenoir", a shade of his favorite color.

Some of the painter's paintings have sold for several million euros all over the world.
