New Zealand imposes the strangest tax in the world

New Zealand has proposed taxing the polluting gases it emits to the country's cows and sheep.

RT quoted the British newspaper, The Independent, as saying that the tax, announced on Tuesday, is the first in the world to be imposed on cow burps and the gases they emit, in addition to sheep droppings.

The agricultural sector in New Zealand condemned the move.

Farmers warned that it risks hampering local food production.

Farmers Union President Andrew Hoggard said farmers had been trying to work with the government for more than two years to come up with a plan to cut emissions that would "keep farmers working".

Opposition politicians argued that the plan would increase emissions around the world by moving agriculture to other countries that were less efficient at making food.

But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the tax would support New Zealand's agricultural sector as it would allocate all money to new technology, research and incentive payments to farmers.
