Music, celebration and mixing of genres not far from the port of Marseille: the Fiesta des Suds will celebrate its 30th anniversary from October 6 to 8 with a “dancing” edition giving pride of place to women and Africa.

"Thirty years is not nothing, it's even a fairly long history, it's a million festival-goers and a thousand artists between 1992 and 2022", underlined Jacques Lantelme, president of the Latinissimo association, founder of this unmissable festival in the second city of France.

Since its launch in 1992 by a handful of volunteers passionate about Latin, African or Occitan rhythms, the Fiesta des Suds has been set up near the port of Marseille, this place where ships from all over the world arrive and where many exiles disembark, like a a nod to a key value of the festival, diversity.

New programming director

It is in abandoned docks or in an old spice shed that the pages of this festival will be written where we dance, feast and palaver until late at night to the sound of the Congolese Papa Wemba, the Cuban Omara Portuondo, from the Trinidad diva Calypso Rose or the Romanian brass band Ciocarlia, without forgetting the local Banda des Docks.

For its 30th anniversary at the water's edge, on the J4 esplanade below the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (Mucem), the Fiesta des Suds has appointed a new director of the programming, Frédéric André.

A change while maintaining "the mix of genres and generations of a popular festival that brings people together", he underlines.

"There are a lot of African artists, because this continent is in full musical boiling," he said to AFP.

Oumou Sangaré, Youssoupha, KT Gorique, Juliette Armanet

In addition to the Malian diva Oumou Sangaré (October 8), a strong woman already present in 1995, the Star Feminine Band (October 7) will allow you to hear the songs of young Beninese women praising the emancipation of women and freedom.

The day before, Kutu will mix the voices of Ethiopian singers with the notes of a jazz violinist (October 6).

On the rap side, the French Youssoupha, born in Kinshasa, and the rapper KT Gorique, who has lived in Switzerland and Ivory Coast, are among the headliners.

The Fiesta des Suds will also be very danceable: Juliette Armanet will shine her disco glitter on October 6, while the Marseillais from Chinese Man will offer their electro hip-hop “Groove sessions” with the Scratch Bandits Crew and Baja Frequencia (October 8).

Determined to promote a “responsible” festival, the organizers will offer 50% vegetarian menus.

As for food surpluses, they will be collected by the association Friday 13 which helps people in the street.
