Greek actress Irene Pappas passed away at the age of 93.

Today, Wednesday, the Greek Ministry of Culture mourned the artist, who gained wide fame after participating in international films, most notably "The Guns of Navaron" and "Zorba the Greek".

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said Irene Pappas "embodied Greek beauty on screen and on stage".

Pappas was one of the most popular Greek actresses abroad, along with Melina Mercury, and appeared in nearly 60 films during her career spanning six decades.

She played the lead roles alongside a number of famous actors such as Richard Burton, Kirk Douglas, James Cagney and Jon Voight.

Irene Pappas received a number of awards, including the Best Actress Award in 1961 at the Berlin Film Festival, and the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival in 2009 for her entire career.

Papas was very famous in Italy, as she participated in films and television series, including her last role in 2004.
