The number of people who died in August on the roads of mainland France increased by 5% compared to the same month in 2019, the reference year before the pandemic, Road Safety said on Wednesday.

In one month, 305 people died in mainland France, compared to 290 in August 2019 and 273 in August 2021, according to a press release from the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR).

Road Safety records an increase in the number of motorists killed on mainland roads compared to 2019 (+2) as well as cyclists (+14) but notes a drop in the number of pedestrians killed (-2) and users motorized two-wheelers (-8).

The number of injury accidents recorded by the police fell to 3,995 in August 2022, compared to 4,354 in August 2021 (-8%), and 4,253 in August 2019 (-6%).

The summer holiday month​ was marked by an average increase of 5% in trips compared to August 2021, with an increase in traffic of more than 10% on weekends.

In Overseas France, 17 people were killed in a road accident in August 2022, compared to 11 in August 2019 and 22 in August 2021. The number of injury accidents recorded by the police stands at 216 accidents , compared to 213 in August 2019 and 236 in August 2021.
