She's stuck on the rocks and doesn't seem ready to move.

In the south of the island of Sein (Finistère), the carcass of a whale has been lying since September 2 on a rocky plateau difficult to access for men.

19 meters long, the animal would weigh around 25 tonnes and could represent several dangers, especially for navigation, if it were to go back to sea.

This Wednesday, the Finistère prefecture clarified that this was the option it had chosen.

"The position of the carcass on a rocky plateau, in an area of shoals and dangerous currents, makes the area impossible for close access for heavy means, both by land and by sea", specify the State services. .

It would be too complex, even risky, to cut the carcass on the spot.

The choice was made to wait for the next high tides scheduled from Saturday to hope that the carcass will return to the sea.

At 2:30 p.m. the #CROSSCorsen was informed by an individual that a cetacean of about fifteen meters was stranded in the south of the island of Sein.

Island firefighters are on scene.

The reasons for this failure are at this stage unknown.

If the authorities made this choice, it is because "the beginning of the state of putrefaction does not present any health risk at this stage".

Already equipped with a tracking beacon, the animal can be tracked with precision in order to possibly be towed.

The reasons for the death of the animal are not yet known.

But according to the scientists, this adult male presented “a state of significant weight loss” and “a degraded physical condition” symbolized by a thickness of fat of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Far from the average of the second largest animal in the world, behind the blue whale.
