China News Service, Nanjing, September 2 (Xu Shanshan) Under the influence of cold air, typhoons, and precipitation in the north, the high temperature in many places in the south has gradually eased recently.

As the weather turns cooler, many Nanjing citizens take advantage of the weekend to go out for outings and camping.

In this regard, Zhang Qian, a dermatologist at Nanjing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, reminded on the 2nd that sun protection is still essential when traveling on cloudy days.

According to reports, Zhang Qian recently received a case. Ms. Lin was camping outdoors with her family. She felt that it was a cloudy day and there was no sun, so she simply set up a tent, but did not do a good job of protection. Erythema appeared on the skin of hands, feet, chest and back, and small blisters grew, and the whole body felt burning and tingling.

I had no choice but to go to the hospital to see a doctor, only to find out that I was sunburned.

How can you get sunburned without the sun?

Zhang Qian explained that many people think that only the hot sun can cause sunburn.

In fact, the main thing that hurts people is the ultraviolet rays "hidden" in the sun and invisible to the naked eye.

Even on cloudy days, the intensity of UV radiation can reach 20% to 30% of sunny days, and up to 50% on cloudy days. These intensities of UV rays (especially UVA) are at high levels and can cause damage to the skin.

In addition, UV rays are also easily reflected, so the amount of UV radiation near water or snow-capped mountains skyrockets.

"Sunburn has nothing to do with the outdoor temperature." Zhang Qian said that even if the weather is not hot and the clouds are low, it will still burn the skin.

There's even an even more peculiar situation: On particularly sunny days, floating clouds cover 50 to 90 percent of the sky.

A phenomenon often occurs in this kind of weather, called the "cloud enhancement effect", that is, the ultraviolet intensity of the surface on a sunny day between clouds may be higher than that of a cloudless sunny day, up to 25%, and exceed the maximum UV index level of 15.

Zhang Qian said that you should also pay attention to sun protection on cloudy days, especially cloudy and sunny days, because compared with sunny days with no clouds, people may suffer more UV damage. It is generally considered to be from 10:00 to 16:00) to reduce going out, and take cover and other sun protection measures when going out.
