The Public Agency for Justice Property (Apij) chose Brain-sur-l'Authion (Maine-et-Loire) for the construction of the new prison in Angers (Maine-et-Loire).

The organization announced this Thursday during a meeting organized in the town between Apij, associations, residents and local elected officials.

The decision was taken after a consultation conducted between January and March 2022, reports

.

Six other cities were expected to host the 850-place prison, work on which should begin in 2024 for an opening in 2027. The selected site is the only one not to present any incompatibility with existing activities.

Several associations were opposed to the construction of the penitentiary center with an area of 50,000 m2 which should cost 130 million euros.

With its 6m high enclosures and its watchtowers culminating at 15m, what would be the fourth largest prison in France is not unanimous.

A public inquiry will be launched in 2023, after a meeting bringing together associations and residents next October.
