In order to protect the elderly from being crushed by falling furniture in an earthquake, architects have started going around houses and fixing furniture in Toyama City.

This initiative has been carried out by the Toyama Association of Architects as volunteers for the past seven years, coinciding with Disaster Prevention Week, which began on the 30th.

About 10 people, including architects, attended the departure ceremony held in Ninagawa, Toyama City on the 30th. There are quite a few cases where people fail to evacuate or fail to escape.I hope that through this activity, residents' awareness of disaster prevention will increase."

The architects visited two elderly residences that had been requested in advance, and in the residence where a couple in their 70s live, a 2-meter-high cupboard in the living room was replaced with L-shaped metal fittings. was used to attach it to the wall.

Mr. Kazuichi Kido, who lives in this house, said, "I asked for this because I was worried about the earthquake resistance of my house, but now I can live with peace of mind."

Yasuni Suzuki of the Toyama Branch of the Prefectural Architectural Association says, "In addition to fixing furniture, there are many other measures, such as fixing doors and attaching filters to prevent shattering of glass. I want to."

Architects will continue to fix the furniture until September 11th.
