A pilot project has begun at a power plant in Hiroshima City to utilize carbon dioxide recovered from the exhaust gas of power plants for agriculture and other purposes.

This initiative is being carried out at the Seifu Shinto Biomass Power Plant in Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima City.

The newly installed equipment can recover carbon dioxide in a highly pure state by cooling the exhaust gas emitted from the power plant.

Currently, about 300 kilograms of carbon dioxide is captured per day and sent through pipes to an experimental agricultural greenhouse on the site, where it is used to help photosynthesis in tomatoes and strawberries and promote their growth.

In the future, we would like to utilize this power plant for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits, as well as for forestry, in order to achieve both a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and effective utilization.

At the press conference, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering President Kenji Terasawa, who developed the device, said, "We want to contribute to the recovery of CO2, which is necessary for carbon neutrality."
