The recent expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque witnessed the implementation of 27 movable domes distributed throughout the mosque, with unique engineering and architectural designs, and the opening and closing of the domes are automatically controlled through a special control room within services supervised by the Operation and Maintenance Department at the Agency for the Affairs of the Prophet’s Mosque, allowing sunlight and air to enter at appropriate times according to The nature of the atmosphere, the level of air quality and purity, and closed to protect the worshipers from direct sunlight, and to preserve the degree of cold air inside the mosque, in addition to the role of domes in transmitting the echo of the voice of the imam and preacher of the mosque during the sermon and prayer, and distributing the sound throughout the mosque in an equal manner.

The movable domes in the Prophet’s Mosque were designed with harmonious dimensions, where the length of the rib base of the dome is 18 meters, and it weighs 80 tons. Solid cedar wood, decorated with wooden shapes inlaid with blue turquoise, unifying the color of the domes from the outside in beige and cladding with hexagonal mosaic and ceramic pieces decorated with harmonious geometric lines, adding aesthetics to the design.
