Recently, a reporter from Chengdu Business Daily-Red Star News found in an interview that there has been an increase in pet heatstroke cases in Chengdu recently.

"In the days of continuous high temperature last week, there were cases of heat stroke in dogs and one death case every day in the hospital." Liu Chao, director of Ruipai Pet Hospital (Jinjiang Animal Science Store), told reporters.

In hot weather, dogs suffer from heat stroke every day

There are not a few cases of dog heatstroke in summer. Liu Chao said: "Our branch takes the case I received as an example. Last week, we received one case almost every day. Some came in the afternoon, and some came to the emergency room in the evening."

The reporter called Xinruipeng Pet Medical Group's online consultation phone. The online doctor who connected the phone said that in high temperature weather, he would receive 6-10 online consultation calls related to emergency heatstroke dogs every day.

The reporter learned that dogs are more prone to heatstroke than humans, especially dogs with short noses and short legs, such as bulldogs, Chow Chow, etc. This is because dogs have very few sweat glands, which are only distributed on the foot pads and nose mirrors.

And dogs can only dissipate heat by breathing and secreting a lot of saliva, so once the temperature in the environment is too high, the efficiency of evaporative heat dissipation for dogs will be greatly reduced.

What are the symptoms of heat stroke in dogs?

If it is found that the dog has dull eyes, shortness of breath, red gums, and profuse salivation, it can be preliminarily judged as heatstroke.

If the dog's body temperature exceeds the upper limit of normal body temperature (39.5 ℃) for a long time, and there is depression and unsteady gait, it can be directly judged as heatstroke.

"I never thought that heat stroke in dogs is such a terrible thing." Ms. Tan, a citizen, sighed to reporters.

In June, they took their one-year-old Labrador to the countryside to pick plums. The dog, who is usually very clingy, didn't come back for more than 20 minutes. Ms. Tan realized something was wrong, and after checking up the hill, she found that the dog was lethargic. , lying still under the tree, his eyelids drooping.

She quickly called two men to help lift the dog weighing more than 70 pounds to the house down the slope.

After returning indoors, the ambient temperature was much cooler, and she also sprinkled water on the dog to cool down, but the effect was not obvious.

Following the advice of her relatives, Ms. Tan gave the dog two cans of Huoxiangzhengqi liquid and added some water. After more than 20 minutes, the dog slowly recovered.

How to cool down a heatstroke dog in an emergency?

The reporter interviewed several pet hospitals to sort out the first aid methods:

First, the dog needs to be transferred to a cool and ventilated environment to keep the dog's airway open.

If you find that the dog is willing to drink water, you can drink as much water as possible.

In addition, you can also use a towel soaked in cold water or alcohol to wipe the inside of the ear, the back of the neck, the armpit, and the groin of the dog, and cooperate with the fan to speed up the heat dissipation effect.

If conditions permit, parents can transfer the affected dog to water at 20°C-25°C to ensure that the head and face are exposed to the surface of the water, thereby promoting heat discharge.

Do not use ice water, ice cubes, etc. to cool the dog. Although the temperature is too low, it can quickly reduce the body surface temperature, but it will also promote the contraction of the blood vessels on the body surface, thereby reducing the heat excretion of the dog.

Low temperature may also cause skeletal muscle tremors in dogs due to the cold, and muscle tremors increase the heat in the dog's body and worsen the condition.
