The decision comes after the actor filmed host Chris Rock live during the film gala.

Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson write in a public statement that the gala was overshadowed by "the unacceptable and harmful behavior" Will Smith displayed on stage.

The letter also states that for the next ten years, the actor will be excluded from participating in all events that are linked to the Oscars - both virtually and physically.

Joking about Pinkett Smith

The origin of the scandal was that Chris Rock during the gala joked about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith and her shaved head, which is due to the disease alopecia.

Will Smith then stepped on stage and gave Chris Rock an ear file, then sat down in his seat again and shouted: "Do not take my wife's name in your fucking mouth!".

Later in the gala, Smith was awarded an Oscar for best male lead for his role in the film "King Richard", about the tennis players Serena and Venus Williams.

In the statement from the Oscars management, they apologize for not handling the situation better.

They also thank Chris Rock for keeping his composure during the evening.

"During our television broadcast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room," the statement said.

"It simply came to our notice then.

"This was an opportunity for us to set a good example for our guests, viewers and our academy family around the world, and we failed," they write, according to CNN.

Apologized

Earlier this week, Will Smith announced that he was withdrawing from the American Film Academy.

He himself wrote that his actions were "shocking, painful and without excuse".

He also said he was prepared to accept the consequences that the academy deemed appropriate.

"I have betrayed the trust of the academy, I stole time and attention from other nominees and winners and ruined their chance to celebrate and be celebrated for their outstanding work," Smith said at the time.
