The new draft personal status law in Egypt sparked a wave of controversy on social media, after announcing the prohibition of polygamy without obtaining judicial permission.


The new law (which is expected to be discussed in the plenary session of the House of Representatives in the coming days) stipulates in Article 14 that the family court judge should summon the wife to know her opinion on whether or not to approve the marriage, and that the marriage should not take place without bringing the old wife and expressing her opinion of rejection or acceptance, and informing the wife The new marriage to the old.

Representative Nashwa El-Deeb, who submitted the bill to the House of Representatives, said: "We have worked for years to work on this law, and we have carried out more than one societal dialogue with a large number of law professors and public figures before submitting it to the parliament, to benefit from all opinions, enrich the law and add to it all points of view." .

And she continued, according to "Sky News Arabia": "The personal status law in force has been in force for more than 100 years, specifically since 1920, and during those decades the environment and people's conditions changed, and despite the many amendments that were made to it, it became inappropriate."

The first chapter of the law stipulates the engagement period and the ensuing rights of the two parties, as "it is the right of either party to obtain compensation if there is damage from one of the parties' unjustifiable abandonment of the engagement, and in the event that one of the parties dies, his heirs have the right to ask for the dowry." which he performed.”

The parliamentarian stressed: "There is an imperative necessity for the existence of a personal status law, which takes into account the current facts and family crises, without bias towards women or men, and the most important thing is the child's interest, to reach a healthy family and a healthy child, even if all the crises of separation or inheritance are around him."

She added, "There have been many reactions to the draft law over the past few days, after one of the Ramadan series aired the personal status crisis. The law we tried desperately to reach the meaning of justice and to be merciful to everyone."

The Egyptian parliamentarian called on everyone to "read the law at first before judging it," saying: "Do not take the rulings from the social media. We tried through the law to be fair to the maximum degree without bias, and we tried to present this law to preserve all rights."
