Suspicions of murder swirl around a woman who ran over a mother and her son in Austria

At first it seemed like a fatal traffic accident, but Austrian criminal police are now investigating a female driver on murder charges.

Police suspect the 37-year-old driver hit the 43-year-old and her 5-year-old son in Villach on Saturday evening, killing them.

A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Klagenfurt told the Austrian news agency (APA) on Monday that the driver had confessed with intent to kill.

However, according to her account, she did not notice the boy.

"The Attorney General's office will request that she be placed in pre-trial detention," he added.

So far, there is no known reason for the motive.

According to prosecutors, the suspect's former partner had an affair with the victim and was the boy's father.

The accident occurred in an area with a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

Then the driver drove another 500 metres.

The driver herself was injured in the accident.
