A conflict currently opposes Christophe Arminjon, the mayor (DVD) of Thonon-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie), and the family of Manon, a deceased transgender, reports Mediapart.
The mayor opposes having his female name inscribed on his plaque at the cemetery.
The deceased had never taken the steps to formalize her change of first name.
Conflict around the law
According to him, these are therefore legal reasons that prevent him from responding favorably to the request of Manon's family.
"Pretexts" according to Maître Magaly Lhotel, the family's lawyer, who felt that nothing in the law required the registration of the official first name on the commemoration plaque.
Defending himself from any transphobia, the mayor had then proposed to register the two first names, which the family refused.
For its part, the prefecture of Haute-Savoie had indicated to the mayor last October that the law authorized him to register the first name of use on the plate.
Faced with the mayor's non-response, the family lawyer decided to seize the rights defender.
