Icomos Spain ,

Unesco

adviser

on heritage matters, has not given a 'green light' to the change of the wooden doors of the

Burgos Cathedral

for the bronze ones that the artist

Antonio López

is making at the request of the

Cabildo

of the temple and the

Archbishopric

.

The president of Icomos Spain,

Jordi Tresserras

, has assured Efe that he held talks with the Cabildo in October of this year and has already indicated that, according to his criteria, the doors should not be changed under the conditions that arise.

"They can make the doors they want, but the ones they propose are not simple and have an impact on the façade, which cannot be modified because the current wooden doors were already there when the Cathedral was included in the list of

World Heritage Sites

and not they can be changed, unless they suffer serious damage, because otherwise the cataloging of the temple would be put at risk ", Trasserras explained.

After acknowledging that his report is not binding, the president of Icomos has detailed that the Cabildo has not yet started the procedures to request

authorization

from the Castilla y León Heritage Commission

for the change of doors.

In any case, if the regional government authorized the change, it would have to inform

UNESCO

, which would appoint an expert from

Icomos International

, whose assessment would be binding.

Even in the "unlikely event" that all the authorizations for the change of the doors were received, Trasserras is convinced that it would not be possible before July 20, 2022, when the

VIII Centenary

of the laying of the first stone

ends

of the Cathedral.

The president of Icomos Spain has assured that he has already informed the Cabildo and the Archdiocese of his support for the exhibition somewhere at the doors in the event that they do not receive authorization, although as long as they do not impact the view of the Cathedral.

"It is the cathedral that is declared a World Heritage Site"

"They are not normal doors, they are authentic sculptures with brutal artistic value, but it is the Cathedral that has been declared a World Heritage Site, not the work of Antonio López, regardless of its artistic quality," Trasserras explained.

He assures that he does not understand the reason for arguing that the doors, which cost 1.2 million euros covered with donations from businessmen, are necessary to attract more visits to

Burgos

, when it is a place with three world heritage sites -

Atapuerca

, the

Camino de Santiago

and the

Cathedral

- and whose main temple is not only protected by itself, but also because it is the "emblematic element" of the Camino de Santiago.

Meanwhile, the process of making the doors continues, which will replace those on the facade of

Santa María

, currently the

'Door of Forgiveness'

in the

Jubilee Year

declared by the

Vatican

.

The Dean of the Cathedral,

Vicente Rebollo

, assures that one of them has already melted and the second, smaller one is about to melt, so that only the central door, the larger one, would remain pending.

He believes that the change of doors would enrich the artistic value of the temple, since the current wooden ones are not the original ones and have little value.
