Torrential rains in the Australian state of New South Wales have caused the most violent floods in the country in half a century.

Sydney is preparing to cope with flooding, as the emergency department has ordered evacuation of its residents in low-lying areas.

The Waragamba Dam, which supplies a large part of the city's drinking water, flooded Saturday afternoon with expectations of the Hawkesbury River flooding, reaching its highest level since 1961.
