For the first time in 15 years, Berlin's population has decreased.

At the same time, Brandenburg benefits from relocations to the Berlin area, as Jörg Fidorra from the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office said on Monday in Potsdam at the presentation of the statistical yearbook.

Berlin has lost 7,719 inhabitants so far this year, while Brandenburg gained 6,817 new residents.

The federal capital currently has almost 3.7 million inhabitants, Brandenburg over 2.5 million.

According to Fidorra, the Brandenburg migration gain in 2019 was around 62 percent, mainly due to immigration to the Berlin bacon belt.

This year, too, the trend continued that young families in particular were moving out of the city by the age of 35, said Fidorra.

While this loss of population in Berlin has so far been compensated for by the influx of people from abroad, there was probably a drop of around 20 percent this year due to the corona pandemic.

Brandenburger much older than Berliners

At the same time, the population in Brandenburg is on average five years older than in Berlin.

In Brandenburg, 43 out of 100 inhabitants are over 65 years old, in Berlin this age quotient is 31. The youth quotient, on the other hand, is around 30 in both federal states, i.e. around 30 out of 100 inhabitants are under 29 years old.

According to Head of Office Fidorra, the statistical yearbook will appear as a printed edition for the last time this year.

In future it will only be available digitally because there is no longer any demand for the books.

This is the end of a 130-year tradition, said Fidorra.
