The number of new cases of Covid-19 continued its high trend, to nearly 14,000 according to figures released Saturday by Public Health France (SpF), very far from the 5,000 targeted by the government.

Official statistics show 13,947 contaminations in 24 hours, to climb to a total of 2,365,319 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Friday there were 13,406, and Thursday 13,750.

This daily statistic must be put into perspective, as it is volatile depending on the day of the week, but the average over the last seven days is around 10,400 cases.

The number of patients in intensive care (that is to say the most serious cases) fell, however, to 2,851, 23 less than Friday.

This indicator, useful for assessing the pressure on hospital services, was still above 3,000 on Wednesday.

24,948 patients are hospitalized because of the Covid, almost as many as on Friday (24,943).

Nearly 60,000 dead since the start of the pandemic

Public Health France has reported 199 deaths linked to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, which brings the number of deaths in France to 57,761.

The positivity rate (proportion of positive tests compared to the total number of tests) remained stable compared to the previous day, at 6.3%.

Faced with a less favorable health situation than anticipated, the government announced Thursday an advanced curfew at 8 p.m. and more severe restrictions for the holidays, to follow the confinement imposed at the end of October.
