A fin whale (the best known species) measuring between 15 and 18 m was stranded on a beach in Vendée, in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, on Saturday.

According to the Pelagis observatory in La Rochelle, this is the fourth since October (seventh across France) and the eleventh since the start of the year having stranded on a beach on the Atlantic coast.

An excavator intervened on Monday.

This Monday, a security perimeter was established.

Three specialists from the observatory cut up the animal and collected samples which will then be analyzed.

Construction companies were called in to take the whale to rendering.

Another very thin animal

The animal was very thin like most of those recently discovered stranded.

To what is this recrudescence of whales stranded on Atlantic beaches due?

“The collision with ships is one of the factors of mortality, explains the observatory.

But, the most likely hypothesis is infection.

The analyzes should give answers very quickly.

In the meantime, 2020 could turn into a grim record year for the fin whale.
