The stated objective is to stem the constant decline in numbers observed in recent months.

The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, announced Monday that he had asked the Minister of the Interior to assign 200 additional police officers to his city.

"I wrote to the Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin, 48 hours ago, to ask him for a strengthening of the national police force since we suffer from a deficit of national police officers", declared the elected ecologist at Radio Scoop microphone.

“I asked for 200 additional police officers in the city.

I have to meet him before the end of the month.

So I hope that he too will have been able to do his calculations and that he can give me an answer, ”added Grégory Doucet.

Staff numbers down for 18 months

The staff of the Departmental Directorate of Public Security (DDSP) in the Rhône, which includes three constituencies around Lyon, Givors and Villefranche-sur-Saône, are currently around 2,800 people, according to a source familiar with the matter.

A job description published in July 2018 for recruitment within the DDSP, still available on the Internet, mentioned a workforce of 3,110 people at the time.

"For 18 months, it has only decreased," confirms Pierre Tholly, regional secretary of the Alliance Police Nationale union.

"What we lack to run correctly is 250 additional colleagues, or roughly 10% of the current workforce," he said.

"The exits of police academy are made primarily towards the CRS, for the maintenance of order, and towards directions like the police at the borders, and finally public security is the last served", regrets the trade unionist.

Asked by AFP, the Rhône prefecture did not comment.
