This is a sad record for the coronavirus epidemic in France.

The number of new Covid-19 cases detected in 24 hours has climbed to nearly 9,000, a figure not seen since the start of the epidemic and the launch of large-scale tests in the country, according to data released Friday by the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

8,975 positive cases have been confirmed since Thursday, an indicator up sharply from the previous two days when there were just over 7,000 new cases in 24 hours.

In addition, 53 new clusters have been detected, for a total of 1,640 since the start of the epidemic, of which 1,009 have been closed to date.

At the same time, tests continue to progress, with 1,029,275 over the last 7 days, or nearly 9 million carried out in all since the start of the epidemic.

46 more patients in intensive care, deaths down

The positivity rate (proportion of the number of people tested positive in relation to the total number of people tested) continues to increase at the same time: it reached 4.5% between August 26 and September 1, according to the DGS, then it stood at 4.3% Wednesday and 4.4% Thursday.

In addition, there are 473 Covid-19 patients hospitalized in intensive care (including 46 in the last 24 hours), or 9 more than the balance of the day before.

Ile-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur still account for 67% of patients in intensive care.

And in Overseas Territories, there are 166 hospitalizations, including 41 in intensive care.

On the other hand, the total death toll has fallen, due to data corrections relating to social and medico-social establishments including nursing homes: 30,686 people have died in France since the start of the epidemic, or 20 of less than the total balance communicated Thursday.

This includes 20,210 deaths in hospitals within hospitals (i.e. 18 additional deaths in 24 hours) and 10,476 in nursing homes and other social and medico-social establishments (i.e. 38 less than the previous count, which dated August 31). .
