One of the main production sites in Belgium of the world's number one beer AB InBev has been shut down since Thursday due to the discovery of an outbreak of coronavirus infection, a source learned Friday union, confirming information from RTBF.

This is the Jupille-sur-Meuse plant, near Liège (east), a town that inspired the name of Jupiler, one of the most famous brands of the brewing giant.

Nine employees have tested positive for the coronavirus there for eight days, and one of them is now hospitalized in "critical condition", Patrick Rehan, of the FGTB socialist union, told AFP, criticizing the management of having "delayed" in taking the appropriate measures.

Around a hundred employees in the department concerned

"The site has been shut down since yesterday (Thursday)," added the union official.

The focus of infection was discovered in the site's logistics-transport department, which employs around 100 people out of a total of around 750 in the plant.

In a meeting Friday morning with representatives of the group's management, union officials demanded that leaders be removed, according to Mr. Rehan.

"People who have not handled the situation well no longer have their place here," he said.

Asked by AFP, management did not immediately follow up.

According to the FGTB, around one hundred Jupille employees have been screened since Thursday.

Belgium is one of the European countries most bereaved by the coronavirus in absolute numbers.

However, the country opted from the start for a broad census of deaths, since those possibly linked to the virus are included in the total, without necessarily that a test could have confirmed this suspicion.

The authorities listed 86,544 cases and 9,899 deaths on Friday, one of the highest death rates in the world compared to the population (around 11.5 million inhabitants). In addition to Jupiler, the Belgian-Brazilian brewer AB InBev, whose head office is in Leuven in central Belgium, owns the brands Budweiser, Stella Artois, Corona etc.
