Recently, the video of a self-made solid rocket launched and successfully recovered by a post-00 student of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics became popular on the Internet. Similarly, a group of post-00 students from the Principal Air Model Association successfully re-enacted the Nanchong frigate with a ratio of 1:100 using 3D modeling technology for half a year. With an order, a remote-controlled ship model sailed quickly on the water, and the maneuvering movements of the big maneuver were clean and neat, very handsome.

The Nanchong frigate is China's first-made artillery frigate. It uses all domestic materials and equipment. It has participated in foreign naval battles twice and withstood the test of Class 12 typhoons. It is a meritorious ship of the People's Navy. After 44 years of wind and rain, it was dismantled in October 2012, ending a glorious life. In 2020, the new Nanchong ship has been formally entered and formed a normal combat readiness.

In order to commemorate this remarkable feat of warship, Guo Shikai, a member of the Space Model Association of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, proposed to reproduce the warship model. The other members hit it off with one of them. After a brief team and division of labor, 8 students set foot on it. "Shipbuilding Journey".

The "shipbuilding project" started difficult because the warship was built for a long time, some weapons did not retain written data, and the warship has been dismantled, the team was unable to conduct on-site inspections. The reference materials are only pictures taken from "Modern Ships" magazine and the Internet With limited basic parameters, progress was once stalled.

In order to ensure that the work is consistent with the prototype, the team sought clues from various sources, using newspapers, books, videos, and visiting photos provided by enthusiastic netizens to repeatedly compare and reference. After 4 months, the modeling and drawing of the model were finally completed.

In the trial and molding phase, the team also encountered numerous difficulties. In order to ensure the progress, the team raced against time and adopted the three-line synchronous advancement of "design, manufacture, and assembly", working day and night, turning sheets of design paper from images into parts of installations. During the process, accidents such as scrapping of processed parts and sudden machine failures and errors often occurred. The team adopted a working model of design, manufacturing, assembly and improvement to ensure normal progress. In addition, in response to the problem of insufficient funds, members adopt hand-made methods to produce parts and components to save costs to the greatest extent.

After overcoming all kinds of difficulties, it finally arrived at the most exciting time of sea trials. Picture provided by the school

During the restoration, limited by the size of the machine processing, the team divided the 90-centimeter-long hull into 5 sections, and used putty material to fill the joints and polish and repair the shape for 3 consecutive days to basically complete the hull. It also has built-in power system and remote control device to provide navigation power for the model.

Drawing, making, assembling, coloring... After overcoming all sorts of difficulties after numerous steps, it finally arrived at the most exciting time of sea trials. I saw the ship sailing fast on the water, completing various maneuvers without errors, and the Nanchong frigate was successfully re-engraved.

The team leader Guo Shikai said in reviewing the whole process: "This is a very interesting experience. Although I have encountered difficulties in practice, it is also full of touch. The mutual trust between members and the kindness from strange netizens have made me prepared. Encouraged."

At the same time, Guo Shikai also said that the school has also given great support to their activities. “There are many scientific and technological innovation activities in the school every year that give us a lot of inspiration. The club has also received the support of the Youth League teacher and the club in the process of practice. Teacher’s guidance."

When referring to future plans, Guo Shikai said that the next step will be to conduct systematic research to improve its own level and realize cross-field cooperation. "We hope that through this way of building models, national defense knowledge can be spread on university campuses, and we also hope that more partners who love models can join in. This ship model restoration is just the beginning, and the future will not only Only limited to traditional model making, but to form an organic circulation communication environment with various large circles, so that everyone involved has the opportunity to truly practice ideas and use their talents."
