If the ricans weren't there, what about the Deauville American Film Festival? No need to make a phone call to Michel Sardou. The answer, we have it: the 46th edition of the event which will take place from September 4 to 13 in the Normandy city, will be, as the mayor Philippe Augier declared, a “simple film festival”.

“Obviously, the Americans will not be there” given the border closures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, but “it will be the first major festival since the Covid. Beaune did not take place. Locarno did not take place. Cannes did not take place. Deauville will take place, ”added Bruno Barde, director of the festival, during the press briefing.

With the presentation of ten of the fifty-two films which were selected for this 2020 edition of Cannes, Bruno Barde promises "a lot" of stars on the stage. In the absence of actors and actresses from across the Atlantic, French-speaking personalities should be legion.

Question mark around Gérard Depardieu

The public will be able to try to meet the members of the feature film jury, Yann Gonzalez, Zita Hanrot, Vincent Lacoste, Delphine Horvilleur, Mounia Meddour, Sylvie Pialat, Bruno Podalydès, Oxmo Puccino and of course the president Vanessa Paradis.

Dominique Blanc, Benoît Poelvoorde, Leïla Bekhti, Maïwenn, Pio Marmaï or even Noémie Merlant are also expected. On the other hand, the director of the festival did not advance on the possible arrival of Gérard Depardieu, who plays in one of the films of the Cannes selection presented in Deauville, Des hommes by Lucas Belvaux.

Annecy films

Among the films on the program are Peninsula by Yeon Sang-ho, ADN by Maïwenn, Ammonite by Francis Lee, Les Deux Alfred by Bruno Podalydès and Last Words by Jonathan Nossiter / The festival will also screen three films which had been selected at Annecy, festival which could only be held in digital form due to the Covid.

Fifteen independent American films will be in competition, including eight films by women and seven debut films.

The festival, which usually welcomes 60,000 spectators, expects a 30% drop in attendance, given the reduction in hall capacity linked to the Covid.
