The ecological transition victim of covid-19?

Before the coronavirus upset our lives, one of the priorities of the new European Commission was the implementation of a green plan. This “Green Deal” must be spread over 5 years and make the European continent a model for combating global warming. However the terrible economic crisis which strikes Europe is likely to reshuffle the cards, some fear that the budgets of the ecological transition will be shifted in support of employment. Behind the scenes, a number of lobbies such as those in the automobile, air and plastic industries are asking for the limitation of ecological constraints by instrumentalizing the economic crisis. And yet, the Covid-19 crisis could, on the contrary, allow us to better understand the coming climate crisis. For François Gemenne, we could thus learn the lessons of this crisis and green revival should be the challenge to be taken up by our leaders.

Isabelle Ory , specialist in European issues in Brussels

François Gemenne , IPCC expert, specialist in climate governance and teacher at Sciences-Po Paris and researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium

The more devastating locusts than the Covid in the Horn of Africa!

The worsening of food insecurity is one of the consequences of the health crisis we are going through. The number of people suffering from death worldwide could rise to more than 250 million by the end of this year according to the World Food Program. But in the Horn of Africa, the pandemic is adding to the plague of locusts, the worst invasion in the past 25 years. The closing of the borders makes it difficult to supply insecticide at the very moment when a second wave of locusts is about 20 times larger than the first.

The guests :

- Charlotte Simonnart , correspondent in Kenya

- Elisabeth Byrs , spokesperson for the World Food Program.

Vietnam's "success" in the fight against the Covid -19

In Asia, the very low contamination rate in Vietnam raises questions. The country took drastic measures very early to close its borders and isolate the sick or at risk. Past experience in managing SARS is also a strength for the country. But this "success" also relies on strong surveillance of the citizens by an authoritarian communist regime.

The guests :

- Bernard Ordonez was in Vietnam when the borders closed. He tells how the fight against the Covid is organized. He contacted the program via the email address lescarnetsdumonde@europe1.fr

- Bruno Tertrais , the specialist in international issues
