"Realism leads" to the second round of municipal elections taking place "surely after the summer", and not on June 21, as envisaged for a time, announced Sunday the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Jacqueline Gourault. "We think it will be difficult to hold the elections in June," said the minister on France 3.

"You have seen that the AMF [Association of Mayors of France] requests that it be at the end of September, so I don't know if it will be at the end of September or October but in any case realism leads to that it will surely be after summer, "she said. "Before, there will be the establishment of municipal councils of 30,000 municipalities where they were elected in the first round which will be before the summer", "in June and even if it was possible a little before", added the Minister of Territorial Cohesion.

Baroin pleads for September

The president of the Association of Mayors of France, François Baroin, expressed Friday his wish that the second round of the municipal elections could be held "in the second half of September". The second round of municipal elections, scheduled for March 22, has been postponed until the day after the first round due to the coronavirus crisis. The date of the postponement must be set according to a scientific report on the health situation which must be submitted to the government on May 23.

At the beginning of April, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had mentioned a delay "perhaps in October", even if the hypothesis of a vote on June 21 was not entirely ruled out. "I have some doubts" about the holding of the second round in June "because if one of the population was still confined", the concomitance with this election would be "contradictory", judged Sunday the president of the Modem François Bayrou, during the big RTL / Le Figaro / LCI jury .

"I am not sure that September is the best date, for a simple reason, it is that we will be in a situation of serious economic crisis and it will be the urgency of the moment", reacted the president of the National Rally Marine Le Pen on France 3.The deputy for Pas-de-Calais would prefer that the municipal elections take place "perhaps a little later, perhaps in March (2021) with the departments" before the regional meetings in June.
