  • The Samu de Loire-Atlantique receives a large number of telephone calls in recent days, in connection with the epidemic of coronavirus.
  • The 15th is now reserved for the most serious cases, insists the Samu, who is however preparing to double his ability to respond in the coming days.

A "health war", with all the lexical field that goes with it. In Loire-Atlantique, the authorities and medical teams are getting into battle order in order to face the "epidemic wave" expected in the Pays-de-la-Loire. If, according to the last count communicated, a little more than a hundred cases of coronavirus were detected in the region, the calls to the center 15, they explode.

Last week, 18,000 calls were received at Samu 44, up from 8,000 usually. On Sunday, the switchboard even listed 3,360. "It is essential that this pressure decreases, hopes Dr. Joël Jenvrin, medical manager of Samu 44. We recall that the 15 is reserved for the most serious cases, that is to say with respiratory problems: patients with mild symptoms should be turned to their attending physician. There are always heart attacks, strokes and cardiac arrests which we must also respond to… ”

Students and retired volunteers

If it is difficult to change behavior in this "unprecedented" situation, the Samu has chosen in the meantime to "double its capacity". In addition to the usual 24 workstations, ten new ones have already been installed. And this week, ten more will be added. "Thirty medical students have volunteered to help medical regulation assistants," says Joël Jenvrin. We also received around 100 applications from retired general practitioners. The training began and continues tomorrow. "

The new recruits should be operational by the end of the week, in anticipation of an influx of severe cases in the coming days, for which the authorities are preparing.

Thirteen resuscitation patients

This Tuesday, out of the hundred known cases of coronavirus, five patients (including three in Nantes) were in a worrying state in the Pays-de-la-Loire region, according to the Regional Health Agency. Eight others, including two in Nantes, were awaiting a diagnosis but also required hospitalization in intensive care.

According to the ARS, 225 beds are currently available in the region, a capacity that could very soon double thanks to the rescheduling of non-emergency hospitalizations. Tonight, the authorities also announced the death this weekend of a 91-year-old man at the University Hospital of Angers. This is the second death of people from Pays-de-la-Loire.
