A 50-year-old was sentenced to nine months suspended prison by the correctional court of Cherbourg (Manche), this Tuesday. He embezzled nearly 60,000 euros while he was an employee of Pôle Emploi in Caen, reports Ouest-France .

This accountant, who lives in the Cotentin department, had managed to subtract sums which were awaiting payment from beneficiaries whose service had lost track. The man confessed to his employer. For a year and a half, from March 2016 to August 2017, he was able to divert the benefits of forty job seekers without being noticed.

Four accounts were funded

This employee was the manager of a suspense account. It is a platform on which Pôle emploi keeps the payments due to tenants whose track is lost for two years. Several cases are targeted by this system.

They may be people who cannot be reached for personal reasons, others struck off, foreign beneficiaries, unaddressed or deceased. The accountant embezzled this money to fund four accounts, all personal.

Addiction to games

To justify this hijacking, the man mentioned having Parkinson's disease, reports the regional daily. His heavy salaries would have led him to an addiction to gambling. The accountant asked for repeated credits to quench his impulses and finance online games.

He announced that he had contracted 60,000 euros in debt. In addition to his suspended sentence, the court ordered him to reimburse more than € 57,000 to Pôle emploi.
