The Italian Council of Ministers last night approved a new package of measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus, including the suspension of judicial activity until March 22 and the hiring of about 20,000 doctors and health workers .

According to the decree approved during the night after meeting hours, Civil Protection is empowered to request materials or requisition real estate (not only hotels, but also hospitals) suitable to house quarantined people in the second country with the most deaths due to the coronavirus, 197, after China.

It also introduces incentives for the production of masks and other materials for virus containment, for the expansion of intensive care units and the purchase of 5,000 assisted ventilation systems.

The judicial suspension supposes the postponement of all civil, criminal and administrative hearings considered less urgent until the end of May, which is accompanied by an inevitable breakdown of the statute of limitations.

The exception is the hearings for the validation of arrests and detentions , the lawsuits related to minors and all those situations in which the postponement could seriously jeopardize the safety and interests of the subjects involved.

In these cases, Justice Minister Alfonso Bonafede explained, videoconferences will be attempted.

School Closure

These new measures join those already applied, such as the closing of schools until March 15, although it is being studied to continue until April 3.

Those killed in Italy with coronaviruses have risen to 197 and those currently infected are 3,916, according to the latest Civil Protection data.

Of those infected, 2,394 are hospitalized with symptoms of different entities, 462 receive intensive care and 1,060 recover in quarantine in their own homes.

All events involving the congregation of people have been suspended throughout the country and football matches will be played behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, is evaluating the possibility of extending the so-called "red zone", which currently comprises ten municipalities of Lombardy and one of Veneto considered the focus of the outbreak in the country, to include an area of the province of Bergamo, where cases have multiplied.
