The national drug safety agency (ANSM) requests the recall of certain vaginal rings, due to the increase in rupture cases reported in France and in Europe. These problems could be linked to a quality defect.

Alert on certain vaginal rings. The national agency for safety of the drug (ANSM) requests, in a press release published Monday, the recall of several lots of this contraceptive. This recall involves certain Etoring and Etonogestrel / ethinymestradiol Mylan batches, which must be returned to the pharmacy. Jimmy Mohamed explained this reminder on Wednesday in the program "Without appointment".

Contraceptive efficacy may decrease in case of rupture

This ANSM alert follows an increase in the number of rupture cases reported in France and in Europe, probably in connection with a quality defect. If broken, contraceptive effectiveness may decrease and pregnancy may occur.

"The rupture of the ring is an expected effect, very rare, that can occur with this contraceptive method," writes the agency on its website. Several signs may suggest a rupture of the ring, such as vaginal discomfort, spontaneous expulsion of the ruptured ring, or pain during intercourse.

What if this happens?

In the event of a rupture, the ring is often expelled spontaneously outside the vagina. However, if it is still in place, remove the broken ring as you or your partner may feel embarrassed. Do not use other rings affected by this recall and consult your doctor or midwife as soon as possible to discuss the contraceptive method to use in place of the ring. In the meantime, use another method of contraception (male condom).

If you have had sexual intercourse in the last five days before the rupture of the ring, emergency contraception is to be considered because of the risk of pregnancy. If no ring rupture is suspected or observed, you can keep your vaginal ring until the end of the cycle, however, use the male condom as a precaution, pending medical consultation. It is also essential to report the rupture of the ring on the government platform: www.signalement-sante.gouv.fr.
