In January 2019, the government launched an offer to reduce the price of tolls by 30%, from ten round trips. An operation launched in the middle of the yellow vests crisis at the beginning of the year, which usually sees the prices of road tolls increase. Last year, the price of tolls increased by 1.8% on average. The government hoped that a million motorists would benefit from the offer, they were ultimately only 100,000, reveals Le Parisien this Thursday.

A real showdown was engaged between the Minister of Transport, Elisabeth Borne, and the motorways. "They didn't want to hear anything. For them, contracts are contracts, ”explains a ministerial source contacted by the editorial staff.

Multiple exceptions

However, it won its case since the dealers - whose three main ones are Vinci, APRR and Sane - gave in. The 30% reduction has been validated for motorists making at least ten monthly round trips on the same section of motorway. However, there are some exceptions to the offer since the reductions do not apply on certain routes. Small concessions are not affected either, as are the portions of motorways managed by different structures.

If the operation is a failure, it is therefore their fault, according to the Ministry of Transport. She explains that "100,000 subscriptions as of December 31, 2019, this is clearly not enough" and adds that "We are going to ask them to provide more information," reports Le Parisien .
