On the "small" lines not yet electrified, and which may never be, the SNCF has no other choice than to opt for thermal trains which run on diesel. But the horizon is clear in Occitania with the announcement by the region this Friday of an experiment with "trains with rechargeable batteries". Trains that simply need to be recharged at the station by catenary to send them independently on the campaign lines. To achieve this, a memorandum of understanding is about to be signed with SNCF and the manufacturer Bombardier.

"This choice involves adapting the existing rolling stock in order to replace the diesel engine with a rechargeable battery," explains the community chaired by Carole Delga (PS). Less polluting and just as effective, this would make it possible, if the experiment is successful, to adapt the 27 trains owned by the region. "

The first rechargeable trains are announced for 2023 on Occitanie rails.
