"1917" was honored seven times at Baftagalan, the UK's most prestigious film award, including for best photo.

The movie "Joker", starring Joaquin Phoenix as the superhero Batman's manic laugh and anarchist clown nemesis, was nominated in eleven categories. The final number of awards stopped at three, for Best Male Actors (Phoenix) as well as Best Movie Music and Casting - a new category in that context.

American actor Renee Zellweger reunited with her opponent in "Bridget Jones's Diary", Hugh Grant, when the latter handed out the award for best female actor who went to Zellweger for her contribution in the movie "Judy".

No female directors

The preliminary discussions about this year's Baftagala have also revolved around the fact that the directing category completely lacked female nominees and that no black actors received any nominations in the main and supporting categories.

The lack of diversity was criticized by Prince William, who chairs the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which organizes the gala.

- We are in a situation where we need to do more to increase diversity in this sector. It just can't be in his order, he said in a speech during the ceremony.

"Feel the cleft"

The opinion was shared by Joaquin Phoenix, who used his time at the prize podium for reflection.

- I feel torn. Many of my actress colleagues who deserve this honor do not have the same privilege as I do. I think our message to people of different ethnic backgrounds is clear: You are not welcome here, he said.

- I don't think anyone wants special treatment, but they want to get recognition and appreciation for their work. I'm not trying to be complacent, I'm part of the problem.
