With 132,614 files filed with the Ofpra (French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons), asylum requests increased by 7.3% in 2019, according to immigration statistics published Tuesday by the Interior Ministry .

The main countries of origin for asylum seekers in 2019 were Afghanistan, Guinea, Georgia and Albania, with the claims from the latter two nations constituting an "anomaly," according to Beauvau. The expulsions of illegal aliens also increased by 19%, with 23,746 expulsions.

France, European champion

Since 2015, the number of asylum requests has exploded in France, according to a report by the National Assembly on the finance bill for 2020: 80,075 in 2015 (+ 23.5%), 85,726 in 2016 (+ 7 %), 100,755 in 2017 (+ 17.5%) and 123,625 in 2018 (+ 22.7%).

Since October, France has moreover exceeded Germany in number of asylum seekers, becoming the first European country. According to a source at the Ministry of the Interior, 120,900 requests had been registered in France as of November 17, compared to 119,900 in Germany.
