• Experience: Ice Hotels: the adventure of sleeping in the Arctic
  • Japan: A hotel room at 80 cents a night ... with one condition: that you let yourself be recorded

Call it hospitality or call it art, because the Icehotel belongs to both world for thirty years. It was in 1989 when businessman Yngve Bergqvist invited two Japanese artists to this corner on the banks of the Torne River to make ice sculptures. Others followed later until one day, some travelers visiting the place asked permission to spend the night in the igloo the site becoming unknowingly the first guests of the Icehotel.

When Bergqvist said in the small town of Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers north of the Polar Circle , that he wanted to make a hotel they thought he was crazy. But since then, every winter the hotel uses river ice to create new art facilities, in addition to a bar and hotel rooms.

Naturally, in spring everything becomes part of the river flow again . The transformation of the place has been such that, thanks to the Icehotel, the dark and cold winter months are in these parts the high season, while the summer, despite the overflowing nature, already attracts fewer visitors.

This season 15 suites of varied themes have been designed. A room has, for example, giant ice ants. Another looks like a feline's burrow. A third is inspired by the island of Santorini, despite the obvious difference in latitude ... Each room is made by a team of different artists under the baton of the new creative director of the hotel, Luca Roncoroni.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the hotel has also carved on the ice a viewpoint to enjoy the spectacular frozen landscape. The rest is as extraordinary as ever: along with the experience of sleeping on skins, activities such as sleigh rides pulled by huskies or reindeer, classes to photograph Northern Lights and dinners in full Arctic nature, among other Arctic plans.
