The Climate Summit or Conference of the Parties (COP25), which today houses Madrid, is called to be a turning point in the road map to accelerate the ecological transition . Global warming constitutes an accredited reality whose origin is human activity. The reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases, as well as the rest of the sustainable development objectives, makes it inevitable to promote a gradual process of decarbonization of the economy. This must be done in a coordinated and orderly manner. Without incurring apocalyptic omens and, at the same time, fleeing from denialist positions that clash with the empirical evidence of the scientific community.

The presidency of this conference promoted by the UN corresponds to Chile, a country that could not guarantee its development for security reasons. The Government's decision to offer Spain as the headquarters of COP25 has forced a logistical exercise in record time , although it places our country as the epicenter of the discussion around the challenge posed by sustainability. Half a hundred heads of state and government, in addition to a large panel of experts, should review the 2020 national plans to align them with the Paris Agreement, which established limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius per year with respect to the era preindustrial. The goal, spurred by social movements, is that of a planet with zero emissions in 2050 . But the reality is that the world is heading for an increase in temperatures of 3.2 degrees if the current trend persists, with more droughts, more fires, more floods and more episodes of extreme weather.

Trump's or Bolsonaro's populism is as harmful as the positions of those who agitate the climate crisis in the manner of a cultural war directed against the market economy . In this sense, the use of a character like Greta Thunberg can be counterproductive, deterring the convinced and giving ammunition to the denialists. There is an identity left that promotes the use of climate ideology for exclusionary purposes, just as there is a denial right that takes refuge in unreasonableness. We must flee extremisms and place climate change as a challenge in which the planet is played to preserve habitability conditions compatible with material comfort and geopolitical order.

EL MUNDO considers it essential to promote public-private initiatives aimed at sustaining the ecosystem, promoting social and technological innovation. The ecological transition must be effective and fair , through the gradual application of measures that guarantee economic stability and include compensation to obsolete industries. For this, an ambitious, but also balanced and pragmatic global commitment is necessary.
