WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Authorities temporarily closed the White House on Tuesday, after a US official called a false warning of a violation of airspace.

Roads nearby were closed and authorities did not allow anyone to enter the compound and the US Capitol was temporarily closed.

The North American Air Defense Command said in a statement that it had responded to an "incident" in the area around Washington, known as the Special Air Base Zone.

She said she had "instructed US Coast Guard planes to investigate and the matter was resolved without incident."

A US official said no planes had been detected and that the incident might have been caused by a fault signal on a sensitive radar.
