“The results of the first stage of the full-scale research aerial surveys of cetaceans, carried out in September in most of the Black Sea off the Russian coast of the Caucasus, from the Kerch Strait to Adler, have been summed up. The number of dolphins in the groups encountered has decreased significantly - from a few hundred to a maximum of 37 individuals, ”the press service of the Clean Seas International Environmental Fund reports.

According to Anna Subbotina, deputy general director of the fund, quoted by TASS, one of the reasons for the decrease in the number of dolphins in the groups was the migration of fish that dolphins feed to other areas of the water area.

She noted that the reasons for this redistribution will be investigated in the framework of the international project of the European organizations ACCOBAMC and EMBLAS plus, a group of Russian scientists will be engaged in the development of a monitoring program for the Black Sea to study all its inhabitants, the state of the water and the bottom.

“Only after that it will be possible to understand what measures it is important to take,” Subbotina said.

In June, it became known that 2.5 million rubles were allocated to save dolphins in the Black Sea.

State Duma deputy, author of the law "On Responsible Handling of Animals" Oleg Shein, in an interview with the FAN, assessed the problem of protecting cetaceans.
