Despite its gigantic proportions, the new aerodrome of the Chinese capital is designed so that no passenger walks more than eight minutes from the security controls to any other point of the terminal. But it is not the only thing surprising about Daxing (with PKX code), located about 45 kilometers from Tiananmen Square.

Opened by President Xi Jinping, it has five floors and an area equivalent to 97 soccer fields. It is the first airport to incorporate two plants dedicated exclusively to passenger arrivals - one for domestic flights and another for international flights - as well as two others for departures. Next spring, when it is fully operational, it will cover 112 destinations around the world.

Designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, Daxing is built looking to the future. Thanks to its generous deeds, the "starfish", as they have baptized it in China, aspires to have a capacity for 72 million passengers per year in 2025 and reach up to 100 million later. It also has the latest technologies . From robots to keep the traveler informed of their flights, connections and weather conditions to facial recognition systems in all security controls.

In addition, Daxing is the first airport in the world to house a high-speed railway station below its surface. Passengers are expected to arrive in the city center in less than 20 minutes. The joint investment in all its areas - terminal, high-speed station, highway and surroundings - amounts to 400,000 million yuan (about 52,500 million euros), which makes it one of the most expensive airports in the world .

One of the reasons that have motivated its construction is that of decongesting the Beijing Capital International Airport, which exceeded the 100 million annual passengers for the first time in 2018. China is one of the fastest growing tourist markets. Of the 20 fastest growing airports in the world, 11 are in the Asian giant.
