The survey of the number of individuals for the first time in 22 years has begun on the special natural monument “Lake Akan of Lake Akan” in a country that is concerned about the decline.

“Lake Akan Marimo” is a special natural monument of the country, and many tourists come to see it. However, growth has been hindered by aquatic plants that have increased rapidly over the past 10 years, and the distribution area has shrunk, and there is concern about a decline.

The local Kushiro City Board of Education began a survey for the first time in 22 years from 25th in order to clarify the current situation and connect it to protection.

In the survey, divers in advance participated by volunteer members who measured the diameter and weight of each marimo raised and recorded it on paper.

Marimo was a big one and was more than 20 cm in diameter. Yoichi Oyama, curator of the Kushiro City Board of Education Marimo Laboratory, said, “I want to use the data obtained from the survey as basic data for countermeasures against aquatic plants that hinder the growth of marimo.”

The Marimo population survey will continue until the 31st of this month, and the results will be released next March.
