August 5, 1844 was born one of the most prominent Russian realist artists Ilya Repin. He became interested in painting in childhood, when the cousin of the future artist Trofim Chaplygin brought watercolors to his parents' house. Repin studied drawing at the school of military topographers, and then mastered icon painting and began to paint churches. The artist entered the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from the second time, and soon after graduating from school he returned there as a teacher. Repin brought up such masters of painting as Boris Kustodiev, Ivan Kulikov and Valentin Serov. The artist considered the key task of art to strive to awaken the consciousness of the viewer. In his main works, such as "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan on November 16, 1581", "Barge Haulers on the Volga", "Zaporozhtsy", Repin appealed to the socio-political aspects of the history of Russia.
