At least 20 people lost their lives and the Afghan vice-president, in tandem with outgoing head of state Ashraf Ghani, was wounded on Sunday (July 28th) during a powerful explosion in the center of the country. Kabul, said the government in a statement.

The attack, which occurred on a road near Ghalib University and Shahid Square at a crossroads, also resulted in 50 injuries.

Immediately after the blast, gunmen broke into the university's premises and targeted the vice-presidential candidate's main office, Amrullah Saleh.

He, a member of the National Movement (Basej-e-Mili), was wounded by a metal chip before being evacuated from his office, said the spokesman. The premises of this political party are adjacent to those of the university.

Uncompromising stances against the Taliban

Amrullah Saleh, who enjoys high popularity in the Tajik minority, is known for his uncompromising stand against the Taliban and other Islamist insurgent groups in Afghanistan.

Ashraf Ghani and Amrullah Saleh, along with a dozen other candidates, launched Sunday their campaign for the presidential election on 28 September.

The responsibility for the attack has not been claimed in the immediate future.

Last week, Kabul was hit by three consecutive bombings claimed by ISIS and the Taliban. Eleven people were killed and 40 injured.
