The Center Pompidou-Paris is currently presenting the biggest retrospective ever devoted to Dora Maar, photographer and painter. This time it is not about the muse and the lover of Picasso, these roles to which she was confined, but of the creator she has been constantly throughout her life.

It may have taken two women curators to finally rehabilitate Dora Maar (1907-1997) as a full-fledged artist.

After all, long before the genius of Guernica turns Dora Maar into an icon, cutting her face from the angles of cubism and making her a figure of the tearful woman during the Spanish Civil War, she starts by photographing it. .

A career as a fashion photographer

She has him come to his Paris studio in the 6th arrondissement to do his portrait. And if afterwards - during the seven years of a relationship - she serves as her role model, she will never stop creating.

At the same time, she will lead a career as a fashion photographer in magazines and an artistic career highly influenced by the surrealist movement. She is considered by André Breton, the leader of the thread of surrealism, as one of their peers.

Great inventiveness

The exhibition of the Center Pompidou-Paris shows all these photographs of great inventiveness. It also shows the painted works of Dora Maar, his Cubist portraits close to Picasso's style, then gradually detaching himself from the master, his landscapes that blend quietly into abstraction.
