Sri Lanka, the island state, topped the Lonely Planet list of countries worth traveling to in 2019, a place famous for its rainforests, wildlife and temples.

There are also some dangers that one should be aware of before embarking on a journey to a place transformed from a spot of conflict to an important tourist spot in a few years. One of the most important things to know before going there is the high risk of dengue, transmitted through mosquito bites.

Dengue is transmitted through the tiger mosquito and can be fatal if it is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. The main mosquito season in Sri Lanka is between July and August, but that does not mean it can not be infected in the rest of the year as well.

Doctors recommend using a mosquito repellent containing a chemical "diethyltholamide" (DIT). The most effective compounds to expel mosquitoes should contain DDT with a concentration of at least 30 percent. There are also repellents that can be sprayed on clothes and are additional protective measures.

According to the Berlin Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine, he was informed of 45,700 dengue cases in 2018, of which at least 45 died from the disease. The good news is that this figure has fallen from what was recorded in 2017 when 395 people died of dengue fever from 185195 cases.
