Armed men and masked men stole at least 2 million euros from an Austrian Airlines passenger plane in the Albanian capital of Tirana on Tuesday, before engaging in a gunbattle with police, a media report said.

Police said the gunmen drove the Van to Tirana airport and threatened workers from an armored security vehicle while the money was being loaded into the plane. They were later reportedly fleeing with their cars and bags of money.

At about 800 meters, thieves clashed with police with guns while trying to arrest them. One of the gunmen was killed. The other gunmen threw the man's body from the car and managed to escape.

It was unclear how much money they had stolen, but local media reported at least two million euros ($ 2.3 million).

All passengers were inside the plane, an Airbus A320 at the time of the robbery.

The plane took off to Vienna later, landing with a delay of two and a half hours.
